Former federal prosecutor: Kevin McCarthy has crossed the line into criminal territory
It has been reported in Palmer Report and other media outlets that House Republican minority leader Kevin McCarthy has threatened telecommunication companies that comply with subpoenas issued by the congressional January 6 committee for phone and text records of the communications of various GOP members before or during the January 6 Capitol insurrection. The subpoenaed records include those of McCarthy himself.
McCarthy has said publicly that a future GOP majority “will not forget” any compliance of these companies with the congressional requests to preserve and supply the records.
The threats of retribution not only reveals how scared McCarthy is about being found out for his role in the January 6 insurrection, but he also has committed crimes in making such threats.
Former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner made a very compelling argument in a recent podcast that McCarthy‘s actions have not only been abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, but also witness tampering. The records of the telecommunications companies are in effect witness to the nefarious discussions by congressional members with Trump Gang members and insurrectionists before and during the January attempted coup.
Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell has called McCarthy’s threats as “the congressional equivalent of ‘snitches get stitches’.” Glenn Kirschner has called on the Department of Justice to wake up and promptly issue an arrest warrant to Kevin McCarthy for his threats of retaliation to lawful federal witnesses, among other serious offenses.
I lived through the Nixon Watergate crimes in the ‘70’s. In fact, I was attending law school at the time. The Trump 2020 election “Big Lie” and the efforts of congressional Republicans to bury the insurrection evidence, is Watergate multiplied by ten.
