This is just embarrassing for Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves, of course a Republican, is part of the right-wing, pro-life lot. Amongst their many detractions and flaws, those of this evangelical persuasion aren’t all that pro-life, especially when it comes to those they disdain and when it comes to Covid. One would think they’d embrace Covid-combatting tools that have been bestowed upon us, like masks and vaccines, to show us all how protective of life they really are.
Reeves, who appears largely uninterested in Mississippi, also seems unconcerned by the raging Covid situation in the state he’s meant to govern. The state is one of the least vaccinated, and Covid has taken about 8300 Mississippians’ lives as of this writing. At an out-of-state fundraiser last week, Reeves said of Covid, “When you believe in eternal life — when you believe that living on this earth is but a blip on the screen, then you don’t have to be so scared of things.” This goes to show how little Reeves and people of his religiously warped mindset actually value the life we’ve been given on this planet. Just because Reeves doesn’t value this life owing to his chosen belief system doesn’t mean he should disrespect others’ rights not to fall prey to Covid.
Such a caustic statement by a state governor is reprehensible on its own. It’s shameful that there are leaders like Reeves who have such little disregard for the lives of others as to make such remarks, and who do nothing to protect their constituents. Reeves is in a position to make a difference but, much like his consociates DeSantis of Florida and Abbott of Texas, he has chosen disease and death over life and good governance. Reeves has thus far taken a hands-off approach to Covid in the Magnolia State, despite the desperate Covid plight there.
