The Republican Party is ripping itself apart as Donald Trump circles the drain

The Republican Party was veering off the rails long before Donald Trump. However, now that the monster has had his fun pretending to lead a democracy, that party lies on a hospital bed, inhaling the Big Lie through a nasal cannula as it helplessly wheels itself toward implosion. A steady stream of anecdotal evidence highlights how divided and unhinged today’s GOP has become.

On the one hand, a prominent Republican fundraising group just drew a line to exclude two of the party’s craziest members from reaping the benefits of its efforts. The Value In Electing Women (VIEW) Political Action Committee recently announced that it is “intentionally” withholding campaign donations to Reps. Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Claiming to value “quality over quantity,” VIEW executive director Julie Conway explained the rationale to Business Insider for why the group is supporting all GOP women in Congress except Greene and Boebert. Conway warned that funding “shameless self-promoters and carnival barkers” will destroy the growing legacy of women being “respected and taken seriously as legislators, policy makers and thought leaders.”

On the other hand, one of the Republican Party’s craziest members just announced she’s leaving the party because it’s apparently not crazy enough. Former Trump lawyer Jenna Ellis, who hosts the ironically named “Just the Truth” show on Real America’s Voice, announced yesterday that she’s “resigning from the party.” High among her gripes is that GOP leaders such as Mitch McConnell didn’t do enough to support Trump and defend “the truth.”

These are only two of the latest examples of how the Republican Party, revered for keeping the Union together through the Civil War, is now fraying at the seams. None of this means we can let our guard down or work less enthusiastically to achieve Democratic victories in next year’s midterms. However, we can take comfort in knowing that the Republican Party is failing miserably at getting a grip as it tumbles down the slippery slide to collapse.
