Ron DeSantis humiliates himself with idiotic tweet, deletes it
Part of Ron DeSantis’ problem is that he’s operating out of the Trump playbook, which is so faulty it caused Donald Trump to lose and become irrelevant while awaiting indictment and arrest. The other part of Ron DeSantis’ problem is that he’s an idiot.
Take, for instance, DeSantis’ decision to start fining social media companies for banning political figures. This is, obviously, about Twitter and Facebook having banned Donald Trump. To be clear, the courts will strike this down decisively, so it won’t actually help Trump get back on social media. Moreover, it won’t gain DeSantis any supporters that he doesn’t already have. So he’s really just wasting his time blowing smoke up Trump’s backside. But that’s only half the problem.
On Monday night, DeSantis posted a tweet complaining that social media banned Donald Trump, but allowed Ayatollah Khomeini to keep his platform. That’s surreal, considering Ayatollah Khomeini died in 1989, and social media didn’t exist back then. It took DeSantis hours to finally delete his embarrassing tweet and replace it with one that correctly referred to Ayatollah Khamenei, an entirely different person who is still alive.
And so now we’re getting a better look at what the DeSantis playbook looks like. It consists of trying to do something vaguely Trump-like without understanding why Trump even did the stuff he did, doing it in an obtuse way that doesn’t doesn’t actually change anything and doesn’t gain a single new supporter, and screwing it up so badly that it all has to be taken back anyway.
