House Republicans are totally blowing it over Liz Cheney

“Cancel culture” is one of the Republican party’s favorite tag lines. Whenever anyone fails to agree with their shenanigans, they accuse them of being a part of the “cancel culture.” Yet, they now want to cancel Liz Cheney—for telling the truth. The New York Times reported that Steve Scalise (R-LA), who is the number two Republican, openly called for Cheney’s ouster and wants Elise Stefanik to replace her. Apparently, these people refuse to acknowledge that Trump lost the 2020 election. Trump has a 30-something (depending on which poll you read) approval rating, and it is frankly amazing that so many of them want to continue to—pardon the cliché—beat that dead horse.

Kevin McCarthy appeared on Fox, claiming that Republicans have “lost confidence” in Liz Cheney, though he was heard saying, “I’ve had it with her” when he thought they were off microphone. We know McCarthy is an idiot, but it is amazing just how many idiot Republicans are populating Congress. The Wall Street Journal editorial page wrote that “purging Liz Cheney for honesty would diminish the party,” but if we are being honest, how much lower can the Republican party go? Do they really think this is going to win over voters for them? WSJ further wrote that McCarthy “knows Ms. Cheney is right. The election wasn’t stolen.” Sure, there are still plenty of Republicans out there who believe the stolen election nonsense, but they risk alienating those who do not. Overall, people are tiring of this turmoil and want Congress to do the jobs they are being paid to do, which does not include trying to silence a long-standing Republican for telling the truth. Instead, they are going to make it tough for any Republican to go against Joe Biden, who is all about the truth and who is also getting much done while they play games.

If Republicans are to succeed in 2022, they need someone like Liz Cheney and not Stefanik, who scored a 48% on the Heritage Action scorecard according to Politico. She is not exactly primed to shore up an already lagging base. At the same time, as Politico reported, President Biden’s American Families Plan received 58% support in the latest Politico/Morning Consult poll, including 54% of independents and 25% of Republicans. Free universal preschool scored highest at 63%, and the infrastructure portion of President Biden’s plan received 57% support even though the high cost is no secret. Given this type of support, it is obvious that most Americans could care less about Republicans, their lack of plans, and their infighting.

Cheney’s spokesman, Jeremy Adler, told the Times that Cheney “will have more to say in the coming days.” This push to oust Cheney is going to backfire on Republicans, especially considering that she is being attacked for telling the truth. This must be one of the craziest moves we have seen in modern politics. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out and the impact it will have on the midterm elections.
