Even Liz Cheney has had enough of this crap
Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) has had enough of the right’s promulgation of the Big Lie. On Monday she tweeted this: “The 2020 presidential election was not stolen. Anyone who claims it was is spreading THE BIG LIE, turning their back on the rule of law, and poisoning our democratic system.” This isn’t the first time Cheney has locked horns with those who continue to spread the falsehood that President Biden didn’t win the election fairly and decisively. She’s wrong about a lot of things, but Cheney is right about this.
Cheney holds some reprehensible and extremist views that align her with the far right, but the Big Lie is something about which she’s correct and aligned with the majority of the polity. She’s the third highest-ranking Republican in the US House of Representatives, but her condemnation of the Big Lie and refusal to worship at the altar of the former president means she’s at odds with much of her party. Republicans in Congress know that the election was not stolen, but they’re too afraid of what remains of Former Guy’s deplorable and violence-prone base to admit it.
Some Republicans want to see Cheney lose her leadership position because she refuses to promote lies about the election, and because she voted to impeach the previous president for his role in inciting the deadly insurrection at the Capitol on January 6th. We’ll have to see what happens if the worst elements of the GOP don’t simmer down, but she already managed to withstand one vote by Republicans to remove her from her leadership position. Cheney is in a tough spot, as she’s reviled by many on the right and the left. At least she is correct in refusing to go along with the Big Lie, and she correctly understands that the criminal Former Guy shouldn’t have any role in her party going forward.
