Even Trey Gowdy is now trying to distance himself from Donald Trump’s sinking ship

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

You know Donald Trump and his administration are in trouble when even their biggest allies are now publicly taking stances against them. Republican Congressman Trey Gowdy is the latest ally to begin distancing himself from Trump amid his exploding Russia scandal, in light of Donald Trump Jr.’s confession and all that’s expected to emerge in light of it.

Gowdy said the following on CBS Evening News on Wednesday: “You should get everyone in a room, and from the moment you watched either ‘Dr. Zhivago’ or read ‘Brothers Karamazov’ to the point you had a shot of liquor with a guy in a furry hat, you need to disclose every contact you have ever had with Russia” (link). This is a remarkable development from Gowdy, considering that just a month or two ago he was still actively trying to run interference on Trump’s behalf during Congressional hearings on the Russia scandal.

Of course this doesn’t mean that Trey Gowdy is suddenly going to do the right thing for its own sake. That’ll never happen, because it’s not in his nature. And he still isn’t planning to lift a finger to investigate the Trump-Russia scandal himself, in his new role as Chair of the House Oversight Committee. But Gowdy is nonetheless trying to actively distance himself from the scandal, because he now expects it to take Donald Trump down, and he wants to make sure he’s standing far enough away from him when it happens.

Shifts like this on the part of Donald Trump’s Republican allies such as Trey Gowdy are the best indicator of Trump’s sinking status. Even those in the GOP who want him to survive, and have tried to prop him up in the past, are now beginning to place their own bets against him. If you want to gauge the progress of Trump’s impending downfall, watch for more moments like this one. Gowdy is still worthless. But when the rats conclude the ship is going down, it changes everything.
