I recently wrote about how Sen. John Cornyn embarrassed himself, thinking he had a “gotcha” question for DOJ nominee Kristen Clarke, when he asked her about what he believed to be a blatantly racist op-ed she had written. Clarke patiently explained that it was satire.

You may have thought this was an unusual incident, but in fact it appears to be the norm. Washington Republicans have repeatedly been bamboozled by satire.

During testimony of Lecia Brooks, Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), at a House Armed Forces Committee meeting, House Republican Pat Fallon of Texas accused the SPLC of categorizing the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars as hate groups. A confused Brooks explained that was fabricated by the Duffel Blog, a satirical site focused on the US military.

When one of Mitch McConnell’s constituents sent him a Duffel Blog piece, claiming Guantanamo Bay prisoners were getting GI Bill benefits, McConnell sent a concerned email to the Pentagon, asking for “a review and response….”

House Republican John Fleming, fearing the creation of an “abortionplex,” shared an Onion article on Facebook, “Planned Parenthood Opens $8 Billion Abortionplex,” with the note, ” …Planned Parenthood, abortion by the wholesale.” He later deleted it.

The former guy retweeted a satirical story by the Babylon Bee, claiming Twitter would shut down its entire network rather than spread negative news about Biden. He tweeted, “Wow, this has never been done in history…. Why is Twitter doing this?”

So the next time you want to have a laugh, send your favorite GOP politician some outrageous satirical story, or just make up some crazy conspiracy theory of your own and drop them a note about it, then sit back with your popcorn and enjoy the show.
