Josh Hawley makes a complete fool of himself
This week, two Senate Committees held a joint hearing on the breakdown in security at the Capitol during the January 6th Insurrection that was launched in an attempt to stop Congress from certifying the electoral votes in the 2020 Presidential Election. The Trump mob that stormed the Capitol was trying to achieve the same goals as Josh Hawley that day – prevent the certification of Joe Biden as the duly elected President of the United States. Hawley, you may recall, was part of the Sedition Caucus, along with Ted Cruz, Mo Brooks, and others who were planning on making baseless objections to the electors of as many as 6 states, all of whom were won by Biden.
At the hearing, Hawley postured, made politicized statements and asked questions, but first, he had the nerve to thank the Capitol Police for repulsing the “criminal rioters, violent criminals” that stormed the Capitol. Now ordinarily, it would be entirely appropriate to thank the Capitol Police for their heroic efforts, which saved lives, and quite possibly, American democracy. However, if Hawley really believed Trump’s mob was a bunch of violent, criminal rioters, what message was he trying to convey to them when he gave them this power fist with a fiercely determined expression, as they were preparing to commence their attack on the Capitol?
Was he telling them to “Go forth in peace”? Was he saying, “exercise your First Amendment Rights in a non-violent way”? Or was he trying to rile them up so they would disrupt Congress and prevent it from carrying out its Constitutional duty to certify Biden as the duly elected President – the same disruptive goal that Hawley was about to fight for inside the Capitol?
