This is the reason why
If you watched yesterday’s impeachment trial and you weren’t moved and/or disturbed by it, then you possibly lack the ability to feel the most basic of human emotions. It was a horrible, sobering reminder of just how truly awful Donald Trump was, how much damage he did, and how close he came to doing far more damage. It’s also a reminder of why we spent four years working so hard to defeat him.
By the time of January 6th, Trump had literally zero chance of remaining in office. It was long over for him, whether he understood it or not. If his insurrection had been more “successful,” it would have only caused an even worse ending for him. But while there was nothing to be gained for Trump on January 6th, yesterday’s presentation graphically demonstrated just how close he came to getting the Vice President, the Speaker of the House, and others murdered.
If not for the quick thinking of one police officer, Mike Pence would probably have been murdered, and Mitt Romney would almost definitely have been murdered. It still wouldn’t have helped Trump. But it would have been an unbelievably dark note for his failed presidency to end on, at a time when he was already leaving office with hundreds of thousands of Americans dead in a pandemic as a direct result of his corrupt negligence.
This is why we fought to stop him from the very beginning. This is why we put everything we had into defeating him in the election. We were fully justified in rejecting Trump’s presidency from day one, and immediately moving to block his every move. The people who lectured us to “give him a chance” owe us an apology. We were in the right, and everyone who didn’t fight against Trump from day one was in the wrong.
Come to think of it, this is also why we never, ever resorted to violence. It’s simply not the answer in a democracy. Donald Trump and his goons sure proved that. It’s why he, and hundreds of those goons, will rot in prison. The impeachment trial is just a dress rehearsal. Trump’s punishment was always going to come at the hands of a real jury. But this impeachment trial is a stark reminder of the reason why we fought against him to begin with. He was always going to harm the nation something fierce. It would have been far, far worse if we hadn’t fought against his deranged anti-American agenda at every turn.
