Kevin McCarthy just handed House Democrats a huge gift
Earlier today Palmer Report pointed out that unless Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy showed some leadership today by removing Majorie Taylor Greene from committee positions, House Democrats would be handed a huge gift. Sure enough, McCarthy – who is clearly in over his head – just handed the Democrats that gift.
Because McCarthy has declined to remove Greene from committee posts, the entire House will vote tomorrow on the issue. Because it only requires a simple majority, Greene will be removed from committees. That’s a win for America. But this will also force every House Republican to essentially vote “yes” or “no” tomorrow on whether Greene’s deranged and violent rhetoric is acceptable to them.
This is where it becomes a gift to the Democrats. Every House Republican will either have to alienate the far right voters by siding against Greene, or alienate moderate voters by siding with Greene. Either way, every House Republican will end up losing some votes over this in 2022. It’ll give the Democrats a chance to win a few narrow House races that might not have otherwise been winnable. This will increase the odds of the Democrats retaining control of the House in the midterms.
