So you’re Ivanka Trump. You have no business working in father’s White House because nepotism laws are supposed to prevent it. You’re only there because your dad has broken every law he’s ever encountered, and his own party is unwilling to reel him in. Your father and your husband are in danger of going to prison in the most traitorous scandal in the history of the United States. One would think you’d have enough sense not to flaunt your role.

And yet Ivanka Trump, who is being sued because she allegedly stole shoe designs from other companies and sold them as her own, recently told a judge that she can’t be bothered to testify because she’s a “high-ranking government employee” (source). The judge took one look at that, and after presumably laughing so loud in chambers that the plaques on the walls rattled, issued a ruling that Ivanka has to testify anyway.

It’s not yet clear which way the legal ruling is likely to go in the trial. To the untrained eye, some of Ivanka Trump’s shoes look to be identical copycats of other people’s work, down to the last detail. But intellectual property laws tend to be very specific when it’s all said and done, so we’ll have to allow the justice system to make the appropriate ruling.

In the mean time, at the very least, the Judicial Branch is once again telling the Donald Trump cartel that – despite having taken over the White House by conspiring with a foreign enemy – they’re not above the law. Ivanka Trump, regardless of illegally holding a high ranking job in her father’s White House, will have to testify at her trial like any other shoe design thief. This falls roughly in line with the court system’s decision to strike down Donald’s unconstitutional Muslim ban. Even if the Republican Congress has abandoned all pretense of the law when it comes to the criminal-in-chief, the Judicial Branch doesn’t see it that way.
