Donald Trump has found a humiliating way to top himself after falsely claiming President Obama wiretapped him
Earlier this year Donald Trump publicly accused President Obama of wiretapping Trump Tower, while offering no evidence and no context. He then ordered Congress to investigate the matter, and after Congress confirmed that there was no evidence of any such thing, Trump never did back down or apologize. Instead he’s now found a humiliating new way to top himself in different, yet all too familiar fashion.
After Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, Congress decided it wanted to hear from Comey about the circumstances of the firing. Trump then tried to intimidate Comey by publicly asserting that he may have secretly taped their conversations in the White House. Comey testified about Trump’s obstruction anyway, and investigators then demanded that Trump turn over any such tapes. Now, after having dragged out the charade for weeks, Trump is finally admitting that he never taped anyone.
Trump tweeted the following today: “With all of the recently reported electronic surveillance, intercepts, unmasking and illegal leaking of information, I have no idea whether there are “tapes” or recordings of my conversations with James Comey, but I did not make, and do not have, any such recordings.” (link). Or we should say that some attorney or handler tweeted that on Trump’s behalf, because the language is too sophisticated for Trump to have come up with on his own.
But in any case, this means that after Donald Trump falsely accused President Obama of wiretapping him, he managed to top it by falsely accusing himself of wiretapping someone else. And it’s more than just a stunt that backfired and ended up making him look foolish. Trump may have also helped to incriminate himself on eventual witness tampering charges by finally admitting that he was lying when he claimed he may have made the tapes.
