Washington DC Attorney General is looking at criminally charging Donald Trump for U.S. Capitol attack
Donald Trump is already on a path to prison in New York State for various financial crimes; a widely documented grand jury is in the process of indicting him. But will Trump also face charges for the crimes he committed in office? A big part of the answer may have just surfaced.
Washington DC Attorney General Karl Racine is telling NBC News that he’s considering criminally charging Donald Trump with inciting violence in relation to the domestic terrorist attack against the U.S. Capitol. This wouldn’t get Trump out of office any sooner, but it would help ensure that he spends the rest of his life in prison.
Trump will surely try to preemptively pardon himself on all possible federal charges on his way out the door. But broad preemptive pardons are legally flimsy to begin with, and most legal experts believe that a self-pardon of any kind would automatically be thrown out by the courts. So the DC Attorney General could go ahead and prosecute Trump anyway, and likely have the charges stick.
