Donald Trump’s day of reckoning
Here we go. The House is passing a resolution today demanding that Mike Pence invoke the 25th Amendment and immediately remove Donald Trump. The House is also moving forward with impeachment today, in order to place additional pressure on Pence to make a move. This comes after Republicans ranging from Senator Pat Toomey to former Trump ally Chris Christie came out in favor of Trump’s ouster yesterday, placing even more pressure on Pence.
Objects in motion tend to put other objects in motion. So today’s moves by the House should prompt a reaction from those Republicans who have been trying to wait until the last minute before deciding whether to call for Trump’s ouster. After all, if they’re looking to distance themselves from Trump at the last minute so they can pretend for all of history that they opposed him, today is pretty much that last minute.
Trump will face a reckoning today. Mike Pence will no longer be able to remain in hiding now that the weekend is over, and especially now that impeachment is kicking off. Pence will have to say or do something today. One way or the other, Trump will come out of today much weaker than he went into it. Even as we place ever more pressure on Pence to make his move, what matters is that Trump is further weakened each day in terms of his reach, his voice, and his relevance. Today is a day of reckoning for him.
