Nancy Pelosi just confirmed she’s moving ahead with impeachment
Earlier today House Democrats released an article of impeachment against Donald Trump, citing him for “incitement of insurrection” in the U.S. Capitol domestic terrorist attack. Now Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is confirming that she’s on board with impeachment.
Pelosi issued this statement: “It is the hope of Members that the President will immediately resign. But if he does not, I have instructed the Rules Committee to be prepared to move forward with Congressman Jamie Raskin’s 25th Amendment legislation and a motion for impeachment.”
It’s still not clear how quickly impeachment – which is procedurally complex – can move. It’s also not clear how many Republican votes for impeachment there are in the Senate. Thus far Lisa Murkowski is calling for Trump’s resignation, while Ben Sasse has said he’s open to impeachment. But impeachment will most likely serve as a method for placing pressure on Trump to resign, and failing that, placing pressure on Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment.
