Missing the point entirely
In the month-plus since he lost the election, Donald Trump has tried to overturn the results at every turn. Many of the steps he’s taken have been seditious and illegal. There’s a brewing narrative that because Trump is going to such criminal lengths, now we really need to be afraid of him.
But this is missing the point entirely. Trump has spent every day of his presidency breaking the law and sabotaging the United States. Were we expecting that to change now that he’s lost? This is just par for the course for him; it’s the only way he’s ever known how to operate.
Moreover, Trump is only taking such desperate steps because if he simply gives up and walks away, his life is over. It’s going to be all about indictments, criminal charges, trials, prison, civil actions, creditor squeezes, and bankruptcy for him from here on out. Of course he has to take every last desperate shot at trying to remain in power, even though those shots have literally zero chance of working; he has no choice.
Trump is now at his absolute weakest point. He clearly doesn’t have the power to make anything happen for himself, or else his antics would be succeeding in overturning the election. Trump is just a desperate guy who’s flailing desperately, aimlessly, and ineffectively as he circles the drain.
We defeated Donald Trump. We broke him. We made him powerless. Now we’re watching him squirm like a fish on pavement, running out of proverbial oxygen. He’s done, and even he knows it. That’s of no consolation to those who are still dying in the pandemic, which he’s still ignoring. But the notion that we should be cowering to him, as if he’s somehow going to magically pull off some big strongman finale, is insane. We’re strong enough that we took Trump down. Now let’s act like it.
