What is Kayleigh McEnany even doing?
As Donald Trump goes further down a path of humiliating himself by refusing to admit he lost, just so he can make an extra buck on his way out the door, it’s serving as a litmus test for his remaining underlings.
We all know why Rudy Giuliani is still going to bat for Trump in such ludicrous and hopeless fashion; Rudy is going to be criminally charged by the post-Trump DOJ, and he needs a pardon on his way out the door. Then there’s Lindsey Graham, who simply seems to be clinically deranged. But everyone else in Trump’s orbit, from Mike Pence to Bill Barr on down, seems to be strategically lying as low as possible, and hoping to be forgotten. Then there’s Kayleigh McEnany.
Yes, Kayleigh is the White House Press Secretary, so it’s her job to be the face of the narrative. But she doesn’t even really have that job anymore, as she instead seems to be working for the Trump 2020 campaign by default. She goes out there every day and tries to marry herself as thoroughly as possible to the delusion that Trump has won the election, thus making sure that she’s remembered as being nearly as much of a villain in Trump’s refusal to concede as Trump is.
McEnany was already going to be something of a pariah for having been Trump’s Press Secretary at all. Consider what a punchline her predecessors Sean Spicer and Sarah Sanders still are. But by leading the charge in refusing to let the transition happen, and by pushing derangedly misleading pandemic messaging that will directly result in a number of Americans dying, McEnany is putting herself in different territory. She’s making herself so radioactive, it’s hard to imagine even Fox News hiring her at this point.
So why is Kayleigh McEnany betting everything on going down with the Trump ship? There will never again be meaningful professional opportunities for her, at least not in mainstream life. So is she planning to host a show on Trump TV? If so, the joke’s on her, considering Trump will be bankrupt and criminally charged before that fantasy ever gets off the ground. Is she planning to take a high paying but low profile job in a far right think tank and never be heard from again? Or is she just so high on adrenaline that she doesn’t realize she’s driving her life off a cliff? We’ll see.
