Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is busy ramming through an unpopular far-right Supreme Court nominee, even while refusing to take up an economic relief package at a time when Americans are hurting. With election day just eight days away, these are not winning strategies. Even Trump seems to want a stimulus of some kind, yet McConnell won’t let it happen. So what is McConnell doing?

Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown appeared on the Joy Reid show on MSNBC tonight and stated his view that “McConnell has already decided Trump’s going to lose.” Brown also believes that McConnell expects to lose the Senate majority. If McConnell doesn’t see any way that this election can go the Republicans’ way, it would make sense (in his evil mind) that there’s no point in bothering to do anything that would appeal to voters.

We believe Senator Brown is correct. If Mitch McConnell thought his party had a shot at winning the presidency and/or the Senate, he’d be doing some kind of stimulus package this week so he could take credit for it. Instead he’s trying to make sure the economy is still a mess when Joe Biden takes office, to make things harder for him out of the gate. McConnell thinks he’s lost, and he’s just trying to pillage while he can; in January he’ll be relegated to the relatively powerless role of Senate Minority Leader.

But this doesn’t mean we can rest easy. Even if McConnell is right that Trump and the GOP Senate are on track to lose, it’ll only happen if we actually turn out and vote. We must spend these final eight days focused on turnout, turnout, and turnout.
