No, the Jeff Sessions resignation offer isn’t some kind of trick. Donald Trump really is that screwed.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions has offered Donald Trump his resignation, and it’s anyone’s guess at to whether or not Trump will accept it. But even as this stunning development is playing out, some have preemptively concluded that the entire story is just an orchestrated head fake, an intentional distraction aimed at somehow magically getting rid of the Special Counsel. But that makes no logical sense. The cold reality is that Trump and Sessions really are that screwed.
It’s understandable why some anti-Trump folks have instinctively assumed that this is some kind of intentional distraction, even though ABC News is in fact reporting that Sessions is offering his resignation (link). In a White House where everyone is lying all the time to try to please a boss who’s lying all the time, and one scandal is often used as an excuse to divert from another scandal, you do have to be on the lookout for those kinds of head fakes. But this is very much real.
Some have reflexively speculated that this is a manufactured feud aimed at laying the groundwork for somehow getting rid of Special Counsel Robert Mueller. But that makes no sense whatsoever. There’s no logical path for going from a fake fight between Trump and Sessions to the magic-wand ouster of Mueller. Even if Sessions does resign, it still wouldn’t be part of any evil genius master plan. The Senate wouldn’t be inclined to approve any new Attorney General any time soon, and so Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein would become the Acting Attorney General.
If you recall, Rosenstein is already the man in charge of the Trump-Russia investigation at the Department of Justice. Rosenstein is also the one who hired Robert Mueller as Special Counsel. So the departure of Jeff Sessions would in no way, shape or form lead to the ouster of Mueller. In fact it would only strengthen Mueller’s footing. So while it’s still not clear whether Trump will accept Sessions’ resignation offer, this isn’t a trick. It’s not an evil genius plan.
