Donald Trump’s tax return nightmare just got even uglier for him
Donald Trump isn’t merely facing the humiliating prospect of losing the election. He’s facing the prospect of going to prison if he loses the election. New York prosecutors already have more than enough evidence to put Trump in prison. But if and when they finally get their hands on Trump’s tax returns, it should be more than enough to put Trump away for the rest of his life.
That’s why Trump and his lawyers are still trying to fight an already-lost legal battle over his tax returns. The Supreme Court already shot them down, but they’re still filing some useless appeals at the lower level in the hope of dragging out the inevitable just a bit longer. But even that isn’t going well.
For instance, the appeals court judge is already telling Trump’s lawyers that their argument is “highly contrived” and “legally inaccurate.” In other words, this is going to be a quick rejection, and not the prolonged rejection that Team Trump was hoping for. This means we’re even closer to Trump’s tax returns being turned over.
Keep in mind that Donald Trump’s accounting firm Mazars has already committed to turning over his tax returns once he’s finished exhausting his appeals. So it’s not as if Trump can simply refuse to turn them over in defiance of a court order; it’ll be entirely out of his hands. And again, the New York grand jury is going to criminally indict Trump on state charges with or without his tax returns. It’s that his tax returns would result in even more felony counts and an even longer prison sentence.
