Nancy Pelosi addresses impeaching Donald Trump again
How surreal are things right now? Donald Trump, who clearly hates being President, is seemingly only running for reelection in a last ditch effort at keeping himself out of prison for his long and growing list of crimes. Now Trump is threatening to abuse his power further by trying to fill a Supreme Court seat just weeks before the election.
This raises the question of what the Democrats are going to do about it. Donald Trump has committed several new impeachable offenses including his deadly coronavirus lies, obstruction of justice in the Flynn and Stone cases, and so on. But impeaching him again this close to the election, given the certainty that the corrupt Republican Senate would acquit him, seemed to have no point to it. However, with the Supreme Court now on the line, the equation potentially changes.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, who will make any decision about whether to impeach Donald Trump again, appeared this morning on ABC This Week. Host George Stephanopoulos asked her if she was considering impeaching Trump again, or impeaching Bill Barr, in order to force the Senate to stop and deal with an impeachment trial instead of ramming through an illegitimate Supreme Court nominee.
Pelosi said: “We have our options. We have arrows in our quiver that I’m not about to discuss right now.” In other words, she’s refusing to rule out impeaching Trump again. She’s also hinting that she has other strategies up her sleeve. As always in politics, the point in these kinds of situations isn’t to actually fire off the arrows in your quiver, so to speak. It’s to make the credible threat of taking such action, thus forcing your opponent to reconsider whether it’s worth provoking such action. With more GOP Senators coming out against nominating someone, this may be falling apart for Mitch McConnell anyway.
