Lawrence O’Donnell confirms he’s remaining at MSNBC after all

It turns out MSNBC’s The Last Word host Lawrence O’Donnell won’t truly have to give his last word for quite awhile. For weeks there have been back-and-forth rumors and buzz that his expiring contract might not be renewed because an MSNBC executive didn’t personally like him. But in an understated yet very clear moment this evening, O’Donnell announced that he will indeed be remaining at MSNBC for years to come.

“You know where I’ll be next week?” Lawrence O’Donnell asked one of his own interns on-air at the very end of his Wednesday night episode. “I will be sitting right here,” O’Donnell went on to reveal, even though his contract was set to expire this week. He then added that he’ll still be sitting in his same chair “talking about everything that happens for the next couple of years.”

In case there was any doubt, he then tweeted that “Yes I will be saying hi to Rachel Maddow at 10pm for the foreseeable future.” His on-air use of the words “next couple of years” makes it sound like Lawrence O’Donnell signed perhaps a new two year contract, though none of those details have been revealed. In any case, his low announcement came across as a signal that his contract negotiations are behind him and he just wants to get on with the show.
