Shockwaves are still reverberating from tonight’s bombshell news that Donald Trump privately referred to fallen U.S. soldiers as “losers” and “suckers” while trying to ban disabled veterans from parades. We also learned tonight that Trump didn’t want to honor John McCain when he died, insisting that McCain was a “f—ing loser.”

Notably, of all the areas in which Donald Trump could have pushed back tonight, he’s specifically zeroing in on the John McCain revelation. Trump posted this lengthy and seemingly frantic tweet:

I was never a big fan of John McCain, disagreed with him on many things including ridiculous endless wars and the lack of success he had in dealing with the VA and our great Vets, but the lowering of our Nations American Flags, and the first class funeral he was given by our Country, had to be approved by me, as President, & I did so without hesitation or complaint. Quite the contrary, I felt it was well deserved. I even sent Air Force One to bring his body, in casket, from Arizona to Washington. It was my honor to do so. Also, I never called John a loser and swear on whatever, or whoever, I was asked to swear on, that I never called our great fallen soldiers anything other than HEROES. This is more made up Fake News given by disgusting & jealous failures in a disgraceful attempt to influence the 2020 Election!

Here’s what stands out. While Donald Trump often accuses stories about him of being fake news, he rarely backs down from the awful things he’s reported to have said. But in this instance Trump is backpedaling over his McCain remarks something fierce. We know Trump didn’t write this tweet, but he surely at least grudgingly signed off on it – suggesting that he and his handlers are worried that his remarks about McCain could hurt him in the election.

This would suggest a notable shift in how fed up the nation is with Donald Trump’s antics. When he viciously attacked John McCain during the 2016 election, Republican voters (and even some voters in the middle) inexplicably seemed fine with it. But with the passage of time, and with McCain’s passing, it may be a different story. Trump just gave away that he’s worried about his his anti-military remarks are going to hurt him.
