Donald Trump’s pal Elliott Broidy is about to get indicted, considers flipping on Trump and GOP
When Donald Trump’s longtime henchman Steve Bannon was recently arrested on federal criminal charges, it made clear that Trump and Bill Barr haven’t fully corrupted the Department of Justice. The question then became whether Bannon’s arrest was the start of a trend of Trump’s criminal allies going down before the election. Now we’re starting to get that answer tonight.
This evening the Washington Post is reporting that Elliott Broidy is about to be indicted. This is a long time in coming, as reports of a federal criminal case against Broidy have been around for at least a year. Broidy’s name has been attached to all kinds of criminal scandals during his time as deputy chairman of the Republican National Committee. He allegedly used Michael Cohen to pay off his mistress. He’s caught up in the Trump inauguration fraud scandal. He allegedly took illegal foreign money as part of an influence operation. The guy is a walking talking scandal.
Here’s the thing. With Broidy’s former business partner having just cut a deal, WaPo says Broidy is also discussing a plea deal. While it’s not mentioned in the article, the only way prosecutors are offering to give Broidy a deal is if he’s ready to flip on people who are bigger fish than he is. This means, almost by definition, that he’s considering flipping on Donald Trump and/or top Republican Party leaders.
So even as we wait to see if Elliott Broidy cuts his plea deal before he can be arrested, what really stands out here is that Broidy is the second Trump henchman being taken down within a matter of weeks. If a third criminal case begins escalating in the wake of Bannon and Broidy, we’ll be ready to call it an unmistakable trend that Trump’s advisers are being arrested in the lead-up to the election.
