Waving the white flag
If you were expecting this week to be a huge embarrassment for the GOP as they begin the four day marathon of lying and ranting that makes up their convention, you certainly won’t be disappointed. It was bad enough that Donald Trump, rather than doing his job as president of the United States, agreed that he would speak all four nights of the convention – something no other president in history has had time for even when things were normal, much less in the middle of a raging pandemic.
Now, Republicans have decided to drop the news that they’re not even bothering to create a platform this year, instead deciding to support Donald Trump lockstep in everything he does, should he win a second term.
Yes, you read that right – if you had any doubts, the GOP explicitly says on the first page that they won’t even bother to create another party platform until 2024. They’re so afraid of Trump and his administration that they’re betting their own re-election prospects on poisonous positions like abolishing social security and Medicare, knowing that their only hope is if Trump’s base comes out and supports their candidates.
This is even more concerning when you put together that Donald Trump has made it abundantly clear that he doesn’t really have any goals for after 2020, and a whole lot of promises he never fulfilled from 2016, like repealing Obamacare and replacing it with a much better healthcare plan. While a number of progressives were concerned about the number of moderate Republicans speaking at the Democratic National Convention last week, it’s clearer than ever why so many are fleeing their own party. Being subject to the whims of an aspiring dictator is something we cannot allow to happen in the United States, regardless of where you stand on the political spectrum – and this is why it is imperative to vote Donald Trump out of office on November 3.
