Kellyanne Conway, one of the very few Trump advisers who has survived through the entirety of Donald Trump’s chaotic failed administration, is now abruptly resigning. She informed Trump of the decision today, and she’ll be gone by the end of the upcoming week, according to the Washington Post. Considering the proximity to the election, the timing is startling. So what’s really going on here?

WaPo says that Kellyanne Conway is citing the need to focus on her “family” – a generic refrain that people in the political world often falsely invoke when they’re retiring or resigning for other reason that has nothing to do with family. But in this instance it very much appears to be true.

Last night Kellyanne’s teenage daughter Claudia Conway posted a number of disturbing tweets, including the announcement that she was seeking emancipation due to “years of childhood trauma and abuse.” She also tweeted that “my mother’s job ruined my life to begin with. heartbreaking that she continues to go down that path after years of watching her children suffer. selfish. it’s all about money and fame, ladies and gentlemen.”

George Conway, Kellyanne’s husband and Claudia’s father, tweeted this tonight: “So I’m withdrawing from Project Lincoln to devote more time to family matters. And I’ll be taking a Twitter hiatus. Needless to say, I continue to support the Lincoln Project and its mission. Passionately.” It’s clear that there are issues here that go beyond politics, and we hope that everyone involved gets the help they need.
