When Attorney General Bill Barr ordered the gassing of peaceful protesters outside the White House, he set himself up for yet another potential criminal charge once Donald Trump is gone. But when Barr decided not to do it again, the story faded, and Barr evaded any short term consequences for his actions. Then he made a mistake.

When Trump’s Department of Homeland Security decided to illegally send personnel to kidnap peaceful protesters in Portland, it turns out Department of Justice personnel participated in that criminal scheme. As a result, DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz – who keeps proving to be fair and uncompromised – has announced he’s launching an internal investigation into the DOJ’s behavior in both DC and Portland.

Here’s what stands out. By publicly announcing his investigation, Horowitz is making it harder for Trump and Barr to simply fire him and quietly shove him out the back door, because then it would clearly be seen as retaliation. Horowitz is being smart about this. And now Trump and Barr face the prospect of Horowitz’s report about their abuses coming out just before the election. That sure blew up in Barr’s face. He should have quit while he was behind.
