Donald Trump just totally screwed Sean Spicer at the Vatican today

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer is consistently inept at his job. He regularly lies to the American public about important matters. He belittled the Holocaust. He probably deserves to be fired. But at the Vatican today, Donald Trump found a way to screw Sean Spicer that was so uniquely cold hearted, the case cannot possibly be made that Spicer deserved it.

Donald Trump met with Pope Francis today, the head of the Catholic Church. So did multiple members of Trump’s family, along with numerous members of Trump’s staff. But Trump decided not to allow Sean Spicer, a devout Catholic, into the meeting with the Pope. Instead, Trump allowed several people who rank lower than Spicer in the White House hierarchy into the Pope meeting, according to Politico (link). This led a number of people, including those who have a low opinion of Spicer, to come to his defense.

Harvard Law Professor Laurence Tribe came to Sean Spicer’s defense in the matter, opining that it was “cruel and disgusting” of Trump to block Spicer from meeting Pope Francis:

Various others on social media expressed similar views. There have been widespread reports and buzz that Donald Trump is in the process of demoting and/or firing Sean Spicer. But those reports also exist about nearly every member of the White House Senior Staff. It’s not as if Spicer could have harmed Trump’s interests in any way by walking into the room and shaking the Pope’s hand. Trump’s motivation could seemingly only have been pure heartlessness – and one wonders if this might impact Spicer’s willingness to remain loyal to a sinking Trump.
