David Gergen has worked for four different United Presidents belonging to two different political parties. He worked for Richard Nixon, who was forced to resign under threat of impeachment. He worked for Bill Clinton, who was impeached but not ousted. He’s seen up close what the process and circumstances looks like. Now he says we’re there again.

Gergen is one of the relatively few CNN panelists who’s not prone to hyperbole, and who chooses his words with great thought and caution. But after a twenty-four hour period which saw Donald Trump getting caught having given classified intel to the Russians, and then getting caught having asked FBI Director James Comey to end the investigation into Trump adviser Michael Flynn, Gergen said on-air on Tuesday night that “I think we’re in impeachment territory for the first time” in the Trump era.

He went on to explain that “Obstruction of justice was the number one charge against Nixon that brought him down,” in reference to the articles of impeachment that were being drafted against Nixon at the time he opted to resign. “Obstruction of justice was the number one charge against Bill Clinton that led to his indictment in the House.”

Watch David Gergen explain why he thinks Trump has entered impeachment territory in this video clip:

After listing off the bombshells over the past week regarding Donald Trump’s behavior, Gergen concluded that “All we see is a presidency that’s starting to come apart.”
