Donald Trump’s golfing buddy Rory McIlroy tells him to go to hell
If you’re familiar with professional golf, you know exactly who Rory McIlroy is. If you’re not familiar with the sport, he’s won several major tournaments and he’s quite famous within the golfing world. McIlroy is also golfing buddies with Donald Trump – or at least he was. Now Rory McIlroy is loudly condemning Trump for his worsening antics.
Donald Trump and Rory McIlroy infamously played golf together in 2017, shortly after Trump assumed the presidency. They haven’t played together since, suggesting that McIlroy might have tacitly soured on Trump. But now, Trump’s dishonest, incompetent, and craven mishandling of the coronavirus crisis has prompted McIlroy to very publicly throw him to the wolves.
McIlroy is condemning Trump for his “terrible” handling of the pandemic, while accusing Trump of treating the whole thing “like it’s a contest.” He made these remarks during a new podcast, as documented by Sports Illustrated. Whatever you think of how McIlroy has handled this whole thing over the past few years, the bottom line is that this is an ugly development for Trump. Golf audiences tend to be overwhelmingly republican, and now the major golf news outlets are all running headlines about how a famous pro golfer has turned against Trump.
