Nancy Pelosi comes out swinging with “HEROES Act” legislation
The coronavirus crisis is still ravaging America, and the economic fallout continues to get uglier. Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans don’t seem to think working class Americans need any additional help beyond the one-time payment they grudgingly agreed to. Fortunately, Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats are pushing forward with a sweeping new assistance package.
Speaker Pelosi and the House have unveiled the HEROES Act today. Here are the key points:
– Testing, tracing, and treatment for coronavirus
– Additional direct payments to Americans
– Payroll protection
– OSHA worker safety standards
– Extension of unemployment benefits
– Honoring the heroes in this crisis
– Heroes’ fund
– Health insurance assistance
– Housing assistance
– Food Security
– Protecting the election and saving the Post Office
This is a great bill. It’s what Americans need right now. Of course the House will have to negotiate with McConnell and the GOP in order to come up with a finalized package that can pass both the House and Senate. Pelosi managed to get the last coronavirus relief bill passed, in spite of the GOP’s reluctance. So if Americans demand that the HEROES Act be passed as well, there’s a good chance that some version of it will end up being enacted.
