Get your popcorn ready: Sally Yates just booked a major television interview
In the months since Donald Trump controversially fired her to try to bury his Russia scandal, the public has been eagerly waiting to hear from former acting Attorney General Sally Yates. They finally got a taste of it, in a sterile and controlled setting, this month when she testified before the Senate. But now Yates is about to put it all out there in a much more suitable format, as she’s booked a major television interview.
Trump fired Yates shortly after she tried to warn him that his National Security Adviser Michael Flynn had inappropate ties to Russia. But it turned out Trump and his White House already knew about those ties, and Trump fired her to try to protect Flynn, while using the Muslim ban as an excuse. Not long after, word of Flynn’s compromised nature leaked out to the media, and Trump was forced to nudge him out. Flynn has since registered as a paid foreign agent, and has sought immunity in exchange for testimony. But it’s Sally Yates whom a lot of people are more eager to hear from.
So what will Yates reveal in her TV interview? There are some limits, as she can’t discuss classified information for instance. But the timing of her decision to book the interview suggests she may be doing it as a way of pushing back against Donald Trump’s recent firing of FBI Director James Comey, which was also aimed at derailing the Russia investigation.
In any case, we don’t have to wait long to find out what it is that Sally Yates has decided she wants to tell us. Yates is being interviewed by Anderson Cooper on CNN on Tuesday, May 16th at 8:00pm eastern time. That’s tomorrow night in prime time. So it’s time to start getting your popcorn ready.
