Captain Brett Crozier just got some good news
When Captain Brett Crozier sounded the alarm about the coronavirus outbreak on his Navy ship, Donald Trump’s then-Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly responded by relieving him of duty. Modly then made such ignorant remarks about Crozier, Modly was forced to resign. The question has been what would happen to Crozier.
Now the Navy is officially recommending that Captain Crozier be reinstated as Captain of his ship. This doesn’t mean it’s a done deal, as Secretary of Defense Mark Esper can still officially veto it, and Donald Trump can still unofficially veto it. But considering the manner in which the Trump regime has handled this, our guess is that if they were planning to block Crozier from reinstatement, they’d have forcibly scuttled this recommendation before it became public.
It’s not entirely clear what Captain Crozier will be coming back to in the short term, even if he is reinstated. He’s been diagnosed with coronavirus himself, as have a huge chunk of his crew. But if Crozier is formally reinstated, that alone will represent justice – and it should provide a morale boost to the crew.
