GOP Congressman crafts legislation for independent Trump-Russia commission after Comey firing
In the hours since Donald Trump summarily fired FBI Director James Comey without cause in a last ditch effort to fend off the investigation into his Russia scandal, the move already seems to be backfiring on both sides of the aisle. In fact one Republican Congressman with a background as a lawyer has already announced that he’s already moving forward to establish an independent commission in response.
Justin Amash is a Republican Congressman from Michigan. Just minutes ago he announced the following: “My staff and I are reviewing legislation to establish an independent commission on Russia” (link). He went on to add his view that “The second paragraph of this letter is bizarre” while linking to a copy of Trump’s full letter announcing Comey’s firing.
The second paragraph of Trump’s letter says the following: “While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgment of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the Bureau.” Trump’s inappropriate overuse of commas in that paragraph long run-on sentence is bizarre in and of itself. But we assume Congressman Amash is instead referring to Trump’s claim that Comey had repeatedly told him there was no investigation.
There is no prior evidence that James Comey ever said such a thing to Donald Trump, and in fact it’s highly unlikely that Comey would have said such a thing. In contrast, Comey announced on live national television during his congressional testimony around a month ago that the FBI does in fact have an ongoing investigation into the Donald Trump campaign and Russia.
