ACLU goes after Texas Governor Greg Abbott over unconstitutional law banning Sanctuary Cities
Yesterday Palmer Report brought you the inside scoop on the Texas bill banning Sanctuary Cities statewide, after the state legislature passed it (link). This evening the Associated Press has confirmed that, as expected, Republican Governor Greg Abbott signed the bill into law. But now the American Civil Liberties Union is going after Abbott and the state of Texas over the matter.
“Gov. Abbott just gave Texas police a license to discriminate,” decried the ACLU on its official Twitter account (link). It’s nearly a given that the ACLU will haul Abbott into federal court to try to gain an immediate injunction stopping the ban. If this all sounds familiar, it’s because the ACLU successfully waged a similar battle against the Donald Trump administration when it unconstitutionally tried to ban people from seven Muslim nation from entering the United States.
As Palmer Report previously reported, the Texas Police Chiefs Association and the Texas Major Cities Chiefs which includes Houston, Austin, Arlington, Dallas, Fort Worth and San Antonio have come out against the statewide law. So the ACLU should have a number of high profile public figures and entities on its side as the battle inevitably heads into court.
