I’ve never seen anything like this
After Bernie Sanders lost five out of six states on Tuesday, three of them by blowout margins, he decided to remain in the primary race. It’s not clear what his strategy is, or what he might do after this weekend’s debate with Joe Biden. But what is clear is that next Tuesday is set to be an absolute bloodbath.
Four new polls have Joe Biden up in Florida by an average of 43 points. This is nothing new, and realistically, Sanders lost the state when he doubled down on his partial praise of Fidel Castro. The stunner is that Biden is also opening up massive leads in the other three states that are set to vote on Tuesday. New polling has Biden up by 28 points in Arizona, 21 points in Illinois, and 22 points in Ohio.
For a race that was competitive, I’ve never seen a surge quite like this. Sanders is no longer even competitive in the states that are supposed to favor him. If he’s hoping to weather the storm on Tuesday so he can turn things around in Wisconsin after that, new polling has Biden up by 16 points in that state. Sanders won Kansas in a blowout in 2016, but new polling has Biden up 24 points there.
Whatever leverage Bernie Sanders has right now in terms of convincing Joe Biden to embrace portions of his agenda, that leverage will go off a cliff once we get to Tuesday. Whatever Sanders is planning to do with this weekend’s debate, he should consider that he only has until Monday to do anything meaningful in this primary race before he’s completely forgotten.
