As soon as the polls closed this evening, we knew Joe Biden would likely be declared the winner in Mississippi and Missouri, because he was projected to win by blowout margins there. We also knew Michigan would get the most attention due to its recent electoral history. So when Biden won the state by double digits, it realistically all but sealed the nomination for him. Now he’s won yet another state.

Joe Biden has now been declared the winner in Idaho, a state that a week or two ago we all thought for sure would have gone to Bernie Sanders. At this point does it matter that Biden is running up the score tonight? Actually, yes. Bernie Sanders has a tough choice to make about whether he wants to drop out now or later. The uglier this night gets for him, the more it’ll become clear to him that he has no path forward.

If Bernie Sanders drops out and endorses Joe Biden in the next week or two, it can help unite the party in such a way that not only will Donald Trump likely be ousted, the Democrats will have a real shot taking back the Senate. This would set up Sanders to become the Chairman of the powerful Senate Finance Committee, of which he is currently the ranking minority member.

Bernie Sanders can help the nation, and himself, by getting out now and bringing the party together behind Joe Biden. The more states Biden wins tonight, the more inevitable Sanders’ swift exit could become.
