Last night the news came across the wire that Joe Biden skipped a major campaign fundraising event and called in by phone, because he was pulling together a major endorsement that’s on the verge of being announced. This set off a firestorm of speculation about who this mystery endorser might be.

There doesn’t appear to be any inside information leaking out about this impending endorsement. But there are a numer of logical clues here. First, let’s rule out some people. President Obama is highly unlikely to endorse anyone while the primary race is still a contest. And we just heard Elizabeth Warren say a couple days ago that she’s not ready to endorse anyone yet.

It’s also unlikely that this endorsement is coming from someone who was always going to end up getting behind Joe Biden over Bernie Sanders. If this was some long-planned thing, Biden wouldn’t be suddenly skipping out on a major fundraiser to try to pull the particulars of the endorsement together.

There are also questions about why Joe Biden would be trying to suddenly pull together an endorsement on a Friday night so that he can announce it as soon as possible. What’s the rush? This is still going to be a fairly long primary race. This suggests that perhaps the endorsement is specifically related to the states that are set to vote this upcoming Tuesday. The most prominent and highly contested are Michigan, Missouri, and Washington State. Has Biden managed to land a major last minute endorsement from an influential politician or public figure in one of those states?

The bottom line is that this endorsement appears to be big enough, surprising enough, and urgent enough to have Joe Biden scrambling around on a Friday night to make it happen. But it’s also probably not going to be quite as big of a name as your imagination is running wild with. We’ll see.
