The deed is done

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

From the day Donald trump treasonously rigged the 2016 election in his favor and began illegally occupying the Oval Office, history was going to write that he’d end up getting impeached. From the day the Democrats took the House majority in the midterms, on the mandate that Trump indeed be impeached, we’ve all just been waiting for it to happen.

Now the deed is done. The first article of impeachment has been ratified tonight. You can say it now in the past tense: Donald Trump has been impeached. It’s real now. It’s a done deal. The second article is yet to be voted on, but it’ll be ratified as well. Regardless of where this goes next, it very much matters.

There have been so few impeachments in American history, each with a rancorous story behind it, that they jump off the page in the history books. Andrew Johnson was impeached because he was loon who refused to do the job. Richard Nixon was forced to resign because the impeachment process had begun and was going to lead to his removal. No one takes Bill Clinton’s impeachment seriously, because it was a partisan farce that the public loudly opposed at the time and still loudly opposes.

The point is that each impeachment comes with a story that echoes through time. Donald Trump’s story is that he was a two-bit con artist who criminally rigged a presidential election in his favor, rated out as the worst president of all time, was hated by a majority of Americans from start to finish, and was impeached for trying to criminally rig a second presidential election in his favor. For Trump, impeachment is just another string of embarrassing moments in the most embarrassing life that any American has ever lived. Considering the criminal indictments he’s facing the minute he’s no longer in office, this will get much worse for him. But for now, it’s enough that America just used the Constitution to figuratively bust this criminal across the jaw. He’ll fall apart accordingly.
