After yesterday’s televised House impeachment hearings dealt yet another devastating blow to Donald Trump, he and his allies tried pushing the narrative last night that they were somehow magically winning. Remarkably, a number of TV pundits quickly began parroting that narrative, because – while it was nonsense – it was scary enough to keep people tuned in.

But this morning Trump gave away that he knows how much trouble he’s in. He called in to the friendly confines of Fox and Friends, in the hope of pleading his case. He seemed to be aiming for bravado. He pushed the notion that impeachment is somehow helping him, even though poll numbers say the opposite. He seemed to imply that Senate Republicans will somehow be able to exonerate him without any cost to their own reelection prospects, when in reality they’re backed into a corner.

Then came the part where, as is increasingly the case in live settings these days, Donald Trump began to completely lose the plot. He said that he was glad he fired FBI Director James Comey, because he’d be in “big trouble” right now if he hadn’t. This is literally a textbook confession to felony obstruction of justice. Sure, Trump has said similar things about the Comey firing in years past. But now he’s doing the Democrats the huge favor of doing it again, giving them fresh footage that you can all but guarantee will be used in upcoming House impeachment hearings.

By the way, House impeachment hearings aren’t over. House Democrats are in court as we speak, pushing to get a judge to rule that former White House officials must testify. Not only is Trump’s bravado falling flat, he’s mistakenly celebrating at halftime.
