Republican Governor Matt Bevin finally conceded today, more than a week after he lost his reelection bid in the deeply red state of Kentucky. It serves as a timely reminder that Donald Trump threw his full weight behind Bevin, yet failed to put him over the hump, and may have actually hurt Bevin’s chances in the end – even as Trump lands in Louisiana tonight to try to put another Republican over the top.

Donald Trump has spent a significant amount of time campaigning on Twitter for Eddie Rispone, Louisiana’s Republican candidate for Governor. The trouble is, it doesn’t seem to be working. The recent polls say that Democratic incumbent John Bel Edwards is slightly ahead of Trump’s guy Rispone. More to the point, all of Trump’s clamoring for Rispone in recent weeks hasn’t moved the needle for him at all.

If the polls are accurate, and if Trump’s rally for Rispone tonight doesn’t change anything, then Trump is facing the prospect of losing yet another race for Governor in a red state. If it does play out that way, it won’t just be a blow to Trump’s fragile ego, as he’s facing real world consequences if this goes wrong for him.

You can bet your bottom dollar that when Republican Matt Bevin lost in the red state of Kentucky, the Republicans in the Senate started to worry that they might lose their own reelection bids if they vote to acquit Donald Trump in his Senate impeachment trial. If a Trump-backed Republican also loses in the red state of Louisiana, it’ll force Senate Republicans to do even more serious thinking about whether they want to bet their own careers on Donald Trump’s sinking ship.
