Donald Trump suddenly has a whole new problem
We all knew this was coming. Donald Trump’s remaining allies in the Republican Senate were always going to resort to this eventually. What’s remarkable is that they’re already resorting to it so quickly – in the latest sign that the timetable for Trump’s downfall is continuing to accelerate.
Based on the evidence that’s emerged thus far, things have reached a point where Senate Republicans can’t keep claiming that Donald Trump is innocent. If they do, they’ll lose face entirely, and they’ll put their own personal odds of reelection at risk – something they’re not willing to do.
So instead, a bunch of Senate Republicans are now going to publicly admit that Donald Trump is indeed guilty in the Ukraine scandal, while trying to spin it as not having been an actual violation of the law, and not rising to the level of impeachment. This is according to the Washington Post. Again, we were always going to reach this point eventually. Senate Republicans are only willing to give Trump as much cover as they think they can personally get away with giving him, and they will not put their own seats at risk to try to protect him.
While it’s shameful that Senate Republicans aren’t simply willing to admit the full truth about Donald Trump’s crime spree, their selfish incremental shift on his guilt is going to be just enough to cause some problems. A number of House Republicans have bet their own credibility on the premise that they could paint Trump as an innocent victim, and now they’re about to be sabotaged by Senate Republicans. Trump’s own past month of arguing his innocence is now out the window. This has left Trump in a position where he now essentially has to confess and hope no one cares. But hey, when it comes down to it, it’s every Republican for himself. Most GOP Senators don’t care about Trump; they care about their own careers.
