Now he’s gone and done it
Since Donald Trump illegitimately took office, we’ve all been wondering what it would take for Republican Senators to draw the line and take a stand against Donald Trump. Would he have to bulldoze the Lincoln Monument and beat up the Pope before the GOP finally grew a spine? Now we’re finally getting an answer to that question.
First came Donald Trump’s Ukraine and China collusion scandals. That prompted one Republican Senator to fully stand against him (Mitt Romney), and four others to sorta kinda maybe show disdain. It was a pathetic showing from a Republican Party that’s come to embody the word pathetic. But then Trump went and did something even more deranged, by making the unilateral decision to immediately pull the U.S. out of Northern Syria, which is a victory for ISIS and a death sentence for America’s Kurdish allies.
By our count, during the course of the day today, eleven Republican Senators have condemned Trump’s Syria pullout, including generally spineless Marco Rubio and generally sociopathic Ted Cruz. Eleven isn’t even one-quarter of the Republican Senate. That’s still absolutely pathetic. But it’s eleven – and that matters, because it only takes twenty Republican Senators for Trump to be ousted from office.
To be clear, none of these eleven Republican Senators have called for Donald Trump to be impeached. They’re not there yet, because that would take real courage, and Republicans don’t have any of that. But eleven of them are now so worried that Trump’s downward spiral might end up costing them their own reelection efforts, they’re finally opening their mouths. Trump has a real problem, because he’s taken things so exasperatingly far, even these Republican cowards are finally starting to stand up to him.
