Thank you Chuck Todd
I’ve been hard on Chuck Todd over the years, and for good reason. The false equivalence. The whataboutism. Allowing guests to get away with lying. Treating politics as if it’s all a fun game. When you have a voice as important as being the host of Meet The Press, you have a responsibility to use it in the right way – and up to now, Chuck Todd largely hasn’t done it. But things can change fast.
Something has changed over the past week or two when it comes to Chuck Todd. Suddenly the guy is hosting his show as if he’s been shot out of a cannon. He’s holding his guests accountable when they say something untrue, or when they dodge the question. He’s making a point of spelling out just how serious the current political landscape is.
In fact you could argue that since Donald Trump’s impeachment began two weeks ago, Chuck Todd has been one of the better cable news hosts. I’m not the only one who’s noticed it, either. After Todd all but ripped lying Republican Senator Ron Johnson’s head off this morning, angrily admonishing Johnson to stop trying to make Trump “feel better,” the video clip went viral, and Todd began trending atop Twitter – and for once, he was trending for the right reasons.
Here’s hoping that Chuck Todd keeps this up. Uniquely challenging times can produce some unlikely heroes. Only he knows why and how he’s been able to find a new gear and rise to the historic occasion – but considering the importance and influence of the job he holds, we should all be glad it’s happening. Thank you Chuck Todd.
