Wait, WHAT happened in the State Department Inspector General briefing?
Shortly after the State Department Inspector General’s congressional briefing took place today, at least one White House correspondent reported that the briefing really was about Secretary of State Mike Pompeo retaliating against his employees for cooperating with the House impeachment inquiry. But now a very different story is coming out.
Democratic Congressman Jamie Raskin attended the meeting, and told the television cameras that the State Department Inspector General actually used the briefing to hand over a suspicious packet of documents that promoted pro-Trump conspiracy theories. NBC News is saying that the IG apparently wasn’t trying to promote the nonsense, but was instead making Congress aware of the suspicious nature of the packet, which had a Trump resort logo on it, and had apparently been dumped on the State Department’s doorstep in some kind of false flag operation.
This is confusing, because news outlets as big as Reuters were reporting that the briefing was instead about Mike Pompeo retaliating against his own people in the Trump-Ukraine coverup. Of course this may have also happened, and Congressman Raskin may have only been addressing one aspect of the briefing when he spoke to the cameras.
At this point it’s tough to say what’s going on with this State Department Inspector General briefing. At the least, it appears the IG wanted to warn Congress that someone associated with the Trump Organization was trying to plant false pro-Trump information within the State Department. Stay tuned.
