Rudy Giuliani just signaled that he knows he’s completely screwed

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Donald Trump’s “lawyer” Rudy Giuliani has spent the past week putting on a consistent, if incoherent, display of bluster. In one TV appearance and tweet after another, he’s insisted that he’s innocent and untouchable in Trump’s Ukraine scandal. But when Rudy got subpoenaed yesterday by the House impeachment inquiry, he posted a tweet that sounded, well, lawyer-ish for once. Now Rudy is signaling that he knows he really is screwed.

It’s not shocking for us to learn today that Rudy Giuliani has hired an attorney to represent him in the impeachment inquiry. It’s commonplace to hire an attorney when you’re being subpoenaed by Congress as part of an investigation into a massive criminal conspiracy. But what is telling is that Rudy hasn’t just hired any lawyer, he’s hired a former Watergate prosecutor.

This news from Politico is spawning a number of internet punchlines, as it means Rudy Giuliani is the latest Donald Trump attorney who has ended up needing to hire an attorney of his own. But the real upshot here is that Rudy is in trouble and he knows it. You don’t hire a former Watergate prosecutor in an impeachment inquiry unless you’re truly worried about going down.

Donald Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen had to hire an attorney in a previous Trump scandal. Now Cohen is serving three years in prison – and that scandal was a pittance compared to what Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani have since been criminally conspiring on. Rudy is in profoundly deep trouble, and he knows it. Also, if Rudy truly believed that a magic Trump pardon was coming his way in the end, he wouldn’t be wasting this much money on a high profile attorney.
