Here we go with Rudy Giuliani’s downfall

Over the past week, even as House Democrats have worked to move forward with their impeachment inquiry against Donald Trump, they’ve seen Rudy Giuliani unwittingly help them by running his mouth and implicating various people on Trump’s team. Now the House impeachment inquiry has decided to target Rudy directly, and it’s opening a portal to Rudy’s downfall.

Three House impeachment committees have just subpoenaed Rudy Giuliani for all relevant Ukraine documents, according to several major news outlets. Yes, Rudy can try to drag this out with a legal battle in court over the subpoena. But here’s the thing. Based on his rambling TV interviews, Rudy appears convinced that his Ukraine crimes were fully justified and fully legal because he was coordinating with the Trump State Department.

At every opportunity, Giuliani has thrown the State Department under the bus, from tweeting out his text message exchanges with Kurt Volker, to claiming on-air that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was aware of it all. Now that the House is subpoenaing Rudy for his Ukraine documents, it’s handing him (in his deluded mind) an opportunity to exonerate himself by turning over those documents.

But back in the real world, these documents are enough to put Rudy Giuliani in prison. They’re also enough to alienate the rest of the Trump regime to the point that people like Pompeo and Volker are going to push Rudy further into the hot seat. It’s difficult to see how this subpoena doesn’t lead to Giuliani’s downfall – and perhaps rather quickly.
