No you can’t have the G7 at Doral, you idiot

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Donald Trump clearly hasn’t enjoyed the G7 summit, and who can blame him? The other G7 leaders brought in the Iranian Foreign Minister just to try to work around him. At one point during the G7, Trump got so bored, he began tweeting out random birthday messages to people back home. So now Trump has a new idea to make the next G7 more fun for him.

That’s right, you probably already guessed it: Donald Trump told reporters today that he wants to host the next G7 summit at his own Doral golf resort property in Miami. No really, the idiot said this. The thing is, he can’t do that. It would be his most egregious violation of the Emoluments Clause to date. In fact it would literally be a crime for him to use something like the G7 to personally enrich himself.

So now that Trump has floated this typically deranged idea, we’ll see what the response is. House Democrats will likely push back as loudly as they can, in the hope he’ll drop the idea. Republicans in Congress will shamelessly say they’re just fine with it, because hey, who needs laws or the Constitution?

But the real trouble for Donald Trump in this scenario is the calendar. At the rate his presidency is falling to pieces, there’s no guarantee he’ll still even be in office by the time next G7 takes place – and even if he is, it’ll almost certainly be his last. So is Trump just trying to pull off one last grift on his way out the door?
