Donald Trump turns his 9/11 first responder signing ceremony into a complete disaster

Donald Trump didn’t have much choice but to sign the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund bill, after it was passed by the House and the Senate by veto-proof margins. But when Trump did sit down to sign the bill today, he managed to screw it up in ways that were inappropriate, selfish, grandiose, and incoherent.

The 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund legislation was spearheaded by Democratic Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, who represents parts of New York City, but Donald Trump made a point of not inviting her to today’s signing ceremony. The legislation was ultimately passed due to the impassioned efforts of Jon Stewart, and Trump also made a point of not inviting him today. Instead, Trump tried to make the bill all about himself.

This is what Donald Trump said while signing the legislation: “I was down there also, but I’m not considering myself a first responder. But I was down there. I spent a lot of time down there with you.” No really, he said this. He said that he wasn’t a first responder, and then in his next sentence he implied that he was a first responder.

Meanwhile back in the real world, when 9/11 happened, Donald Trump publicly bragged that the terrorist attack had made his own building the tallest in lower Manhattan. Then he falsely claimed that Muslims were celebrating the attack on rooftops. Trump also claimed that he “lost hundreds of friends” in the 9/11 attack. Now he’s pretending he was at Ground Zero helping people after the attack. Trump needs to resign.

It's been a tough week, a tough month, a tough year. For all of us. But the fight goes on. Because we know how important this is. Because we care. Because we're the ones who fight. It's you and me.
